Upgradation of five museums in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Jan 5 (UNI) Efforts were being made to revamp the presentation, documentation and infrastructure of the five museums here as part of the Chandigarh Administration's efforts to promote tourism in the state.

The five museums--the Government Museum and Art Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the Chandigarh Architecture Museum, the National Gallery of Portraits, and the International Dolls Museum have different collection of sculptures, miniature paintings besides manuscripts of Brahmincal, Jain, Buddhist, Islamic and Sikh among others.

The Chandigarh Museum has loaned three rare paper and metal manuscripts -- Sundara Shringar, Treatise on Toiletry and Cosmetics for beautification, four folios of the holy Bhagvad Gita belonging to the 18th century AD and Brass Quran of the 20th century AD -- from its collection to the four-day International Exhibition of Indian Manuscripts at the Museum Fuer Angewandte (Museum of Applied Art) at Frankfurt in Germany on January 5.

Chandigarh Government Museum and Art Gallery Director V N Singh, a known museologist with specialisation in the digital documentation presentation and management of museum collections, would be participating in the exhibition.

The Administration has also decided to soon come up with a permanent gallery on ''India's struggle for freedom'' at the National Gallery of Portraits here.
