Tension prevails in Aurangabad after idol desecration
Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Jan 5 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the city here today after desecration of a religious idol by a 31-year-old miscreant.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) K G Patil said the incident happened in the Gulmandi locality of the town in the morning. The police later arrested the miscreant who allegedly desecrated the idol.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers downed their shutters in the Gulmandi market as well as other areas such as Nirala Bazar, Rangar Galli, Ramnagar, Hudco, Chikhalthana and Cidco localities of the city.
Lok Sabha Member Chandrakant Khaire, Shiv Sena district unit president Pradip Jaiswal, Mayor Bhagwat Karad, and MLC Shrikant Joshi, who gathered at the Gulmandi, have condemned the act of desecration.
According to Mr Patil, police ''bandobast'' has been tightened after the incident. ''Though in most of the localities a total bandh is being observed spontaneously, no untoward incident has been reported from any part of the city,'' Mr Patil said.
