Secret ballots reject ULFA's sovereignty demand in Asom

Guwahati, Jan 5 (UNI) Over 95 per cent of people who participated in a secret ballot in nine districts of Asom have rejected the ULFA's demand for a 'sovereign' state.

This was disclosed by secretary general of Assam Public Works (APW) Abhijit Sharma while declaring the results of the voting held over a phase of a couple of months.

He added that other districts of the state would also be included in the opinion poll in a phased manner.

The people were asked to vote for or against the question - 'Do you support the demand of 'sovereignty' of Asom by ULFA?' The highest votes against the ULFA is demand were polled in Darrang district, with 99.42 per cent votes taking an opposite stand from the banned outfit.

Dhubri and Lakhimpur followed in close with 98.56 per cent and 98.02 per cent votes registered against the ULFA's demand. The most votes polled for the outfits demand were recorded in Barpeta, which were as low as 9.52 per cent.

Capital Guwahati also cast its vote with a mere 6.23 per cent supporting the sovereignty demand.
