Bangalore, Jan 5: The prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will increase its intake by seven per cent to accommodate the OBC quota in a phased manner as approved by the Union Government, IIMB Director Prakash G Apte said today.

Speaking to reporters here after signing an MoU with the Stanford Business School here, he said the intake would go up from the present 250 to 280.

Mr Apte said the IIMB had sought additional Central funds of Rs 140 crore, but the Union Human Resources Development Ministry had agreed to provide just Rs 45 crore by March next. ''This will suffice for the seven per cent hike in intake for this year. If we have to increase the intake further, we would need more money.'' Stating that they would need more land and more physical infrastructure to increase the intake as per the recommendations of the Oversight Committee on OBC quota, he said ''we need 50 acres of land and it would cost Rs 80 crore. The land problem remains and the Government has not committed anything regarding buying additional land.''

About the institute's Singapore campus, he said still more work need to be done. ''We are not going to build any infrastructure there...we will only be hiring some space. It is a joint programme with the Singapore University. Teachers will be sent from here. The Board of Governors had appointed a committee for this purpose and it had submitted its report.''
