Chandigarh, Jan 5 (UNI) Devotees today took an early morning dip in sacred waters braving the icy cold winds, visited Gurdwaras, took out religious processions and arranged community kitchens across the northwest region to celebrate the birth 340th anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru.

There was a steady flow of devotees at the Golden Temple, Amritsar, since early morning despite plummeting temperatures. At various places in Punjab, traditional religious fervour and gaiety marked the occasion as the devouts took out processions and displayed traditional 'Gatka feats martiol arts.

A report from Moga said thousands of devotees thronged the sacred tanks of Gurdwara Baba Farid at Faridkot and other historic Gurdwaras at Muktsar, Takhtpura and Nanaksar to take a holy dip on the occasion before visiting the shrine.

Reports from Himachal Pradesh and Haryana said devotees visited the gurdwaras to pay obeisance and attended the ''akhand path bhog ceremonies.'' Community kitchens were organised at various places in the region for devotees.

Nagar Kirtans were also taken out to mark the Gurpurab.
