Coimbatore, Jan 5 (UNI) Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) R &D Chief Controller A Sivathanu Pillai today announced plans to provide one lakh light weight calipers to polio affected children in two years in association with the Lions Club and government organisations.

Talking to newsmen here, Dr Pillai and Lions Club International Director K G Ramakrishnamurhty said the country had over ten lakh polio victims.

The DRDO had so far given light weight calipers to only 13,000 people. The Lions Club will meet the cost of producing the calipers which would be standardised through research soon.

At present the calipers were being produced only in small numbers at Kanpur. They planned to give the technology to two or three units to produce them in large numbers.

These calipers cost half of the conventional ones and weighed just a tenth of the usual calipers.

On Supersonic Missle Brahmos, Dr Pillai said the project was a joint venture between India and Russia and was a success.
