Srinagar, Jan 5: Breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Sumbji was taken into preventive custody alongwith five others by the police today, official sources said.

Sumbji and others were detained for precautionary measures, they said.

However, a spokesman of the HC Ayaz Akbar said Sumbji and six other leaders of the amalgam, including Firdous Ahmad Shah, Mohammad Shafi Lone and Moulana Bashir were detained, while on way to Shangus in south Kashmir district of Anantnag, where they were scheduled to join protests against the incident yesterday in which some unidentified persons entered a local mosque and desecrated the place and the holy Quran there.

Meanwhile, massive protests against the incident continued in Shangus and other adjoining areas. Shops and other business establishments were closed and traffic was off the roads in protest against the incident.

People are demanding immediate arrest of miscreants responsible for hurting the sentiments of Muslims.

A senior police officer, who visited the spot, assured them that a proper inquiry would be conducted and those responsible would be brought to book.
