Two debt-ridden farmers commit suicide
Kozhikode, Jan 2 (UNI) Two debt-ridden farmers in Wayanad district allegedly committed suicide today to escape from bank debts, though the Government had declared various relief measures for the farmers.
The victims were identified as Baburaj (47) of Vengappally and Shaji (28) of Perya, in Wayanad district.
According to family sources, Baburaj had a debt of Rs seven lakh from three different banks, taken for agriculture purpose. He had also received recovery notice from the banks few days back.
Shaji had also a debt of Rs One lakh.
According to unofficial sources, last year, 55 debt-ridden farmers had committed suicide in Wayanad district, where the maximum number of farmers suicide was reported in the State.
The farmers' community in the district had conducted various agitations for the Government intervention to free the farmers from debt trap.
