Sukhna goes Dal Lake way with shikaras

Chandigarh, Jan 2: Those wishing for a shikara ride need not wait to go to Srinagar's Dal Lake as the Sukhna Lake now promises to offer a similar experience to visitors here.

The Shikaras, made of Deodar wood and manufactured at Dal Lake, would enhance the beauty of Sukhna Lake and attract more tourists to this spot, a spokesman of Chandigarh Tourism said.

Punjab Governor Gen (retd) S F Rodrigues and his wife Jean Rodrigues, after the launching ceremony, went round on a joy ride in the Shikara at Sukhna Lake yesterday.

Both were welcomed in a traditional Kashmiri way and were presented 'Atthor'. Children and elders attired in colourful Kashmiri dresses escorted them to the Shikaras.

The Kashmiri Sahayak Sabha of Chandigarh also showcased the culture and tradition of Kashmir on the occasion.

The significant feature of the ceremony was the participation of poor children in large numbers. They greeted the Chief Guest and other dignitaries on the New Year day.
