Sharjhah-based company falsely implicates Indian
Dubai, Jan 2 (UNI) A Sharjhah-based company falsely implicated an Indian in an embezzlement case, following which he is now undergoing psychiatric treatment to get over his mental depression.
Lal Shankar, who worked as an accountant with the company, also spent a month in jail in connection with the case.
He was accused of theft after Dh15,000 went missing from the company's locker.
As no legal assistance was forthcoming, his brother in India moved an Indian court, which directed the Indian Embassy and the Consulate to provide legal representation.
Shamsuddin Karunagappally, a Dubai-based lawyer, who took up his case, told Emirates today that Shankar was pressurised to confess to the crime as the company had promised to get him out of jail if he owed up the theft.
The lawyer, who said there are several such cases, usually of domestic servants falsely accuse of thefts, called upon the Indian Consulate to provide legal assistance to all such prisoners.
