Surat, Jan 2 (UNI) Prayas, a non-governmental organisation working for the protection of birds and animals, is planning to distribute 3,000 colour posters among the student community, as part of its campign to protect hundreds of birds from kite flying injuries this year.

Prayas will also train hundreds of students to protect birds injured in kite flying, from next week onwards.

It was the fact that a large number of birds were dying in the last years due to the injuries occured from kite flying that prompted Prayas to intensify its campaign this year.

''Large number of birds are injured due to kite flying every year and we thought that we should do something to prevent the killing of birds. That is why we want to bring awareness among the people'', said Rakesh Gandhi, an activist working with Prayas.

According to Prayas, around 360 birds were injured last year due to kite flying, out of which only 320 birds could be saved.

''Last year we found that we have only limited number of trained people to handle the injured birds and we thought it is better this year to train students to handle the injured birds'', Gandhi said.

The NGO also plans to organise a ''birds day'' in colleges on January 14 to bring awreness among the students about the protection of birds.

''We think that it is a larger issue of protecting our environment. A large number of migratory birds are coming to the state in this season and many of them are injured during the kite flying festival. We are not against kite flying, but people should think about birds while they are engaged in kite flying'', Rakesh Gandhi added.
