Generation in VTPS unit 2 to resume by evening

Vijayawada, Jan 2: The generation in 210 mw unit-two of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS), tripped yesterday, following a leak in the boiler tube would resume by this evening, according to VTPS Chief Engineer P Y Ratna Kumar.

Talking to sources, he said Unit-two was immediately shut down after the leak was noticed and necessary repair works were going on.

Meanwhile, the 500 mw unit-2 of Simhadri power station at Visakhapatnam, which also developed a similar snag yesterday, resumed generation since morning, official sources said.

Following the tripping of both units, APTRANSCO had tied up with other power trading companies to purchase an additional 300 mw of power to tide over the power crisis.

The sudden problem had upset the distribution system as it was improving slightly following restoration of 435 mw at Kothagudem.

The previous total loss of 1035 mw was reduced to 600 mw following restoration of three out of service units at Kothagudem.

But now the power shortage mounted to 1310 mw following tripping of two units at Simhadri and Vijayawada, the sources added.
