CM tells officials to quickly complete irrigation projects

Hyderabad, Jan 2 (UNI) Keeping in view larger interests of people of Khammam, Krishna and West Godavari districts, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today asked the Irrigation Department to begin work on Indira Sagar and Rajiv Sagar projects early.

Dr Reddy also directed the department to provide Rs 600 crore in the next financial year towards these projects. The department agreed to commence the work by March.

Responding to representations of MLAs of Khammam District, the Chief Minister said the process of tenders for both projects would be finalised by February. With completion of Dummugudem, renamed Rajiv Sagar Lift Irrigation Scheme and Indira Sagar, around four lakh acre of land would be irrigated.

The total project cost for Indira Sagar was Rs 1,824 crore and for Rajiv Sagar Rs 1,681 crore.

Indira Sagar Lift Irrigation was conceived to irrigate a total of 2.00 lakh acre with 1,30,000 acre in Khammam District, 45,000 in Krishna District and 25,000 in West Godavari District by lifting 16.5 TMC of water from Indira Sagar (Polavaram) Project.

Rajiv Sagar Lift Irrigation Scheme was contemplated to irrigate 2.00 lakh acre in Khammam District by lifting 16.5 TMC of water from the existing Dummugudem Anicut.
