New year celebrated with enthusiasm in Chennai

Chennai, Jan 1: People of this teeming megapolis ushered in the New Year with traditional gaiety and religious fervour.

People clad in new clothes visited churches, mosques and temples to mark the occasion.

Tens and hundreds of people thronged the temples where special poojas were performed.

Long queues of devotees were seen in the famous Parthasarathy temple, Lord Muruuga temple at Vadapalani and the ancient Kapaleeswarar temple at Mylapore.

Special midnight mass was held in all the churches.

At the Marina beach, where new year revellers congregated to usher in 2007 at midnight, Police had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident.

Police also maintained a strict vigil on the East Coast Road.
