Jawans go berserk over armyman's arrest

Kolkata, Jan 1 (UNI) Army jawans invaded a city police station and forcibly released altogether 11 people, including two army officers, from the lock-up, turning sour the New Year bash here in the wee hours today.

Police said altogether 11 people, including policemen, were injured in the attack by the jawans who also broke furniture and other articles in the police station.

The incident occurred after the Park Street police picked up a Lieutenent Colonel and a Major from a hotel on the basis of complaint of eve-teasing during a New Year celebration after midnight.

After an hour a posse of army jawans came rushing from the Salt Lake barrack and, marched into the police station, breaking whatever came their way.

They forcibly released the two officers at gun-point and nine others who had had been arrrested on different charges earlier.

A defence spokesperson told UNI that the matter was under investigation of the army and appropriate action would be taken if anybody was found guilty.
