Violent protests in Kashmir after Army vehicle kills old man

Srinagar, Dec 31 (UNI) Violent protests erupted in border district of Kupwara in north Kashmir after a village elder was allegedly crushed to death by a fast moving Army vehicle today.

Sources said 75-year-old Mohammad Shafiq Lone was allegedly hit by a speeding Army vehicle at Iqbal market in Kupwara town at around 1100 hrs. He was killed on the spot.

Angry villagers later assembled at the scene and staged violent protests. They shouted slogans against the Army and also damaged the vehicle, the sources added.

Senior police and civil officials rushed to the spot.

Police have registered a case and arrested the errant driver, the sources said.
