Flood relief distributed to textile units in Surat

Surat, Dec 30 (UNI) Union Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela today distributed flood relief to 20 textile units, which were affected by the floods in August.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vaghela said it was for the first time in the country that such calamity relief scheme was provided to textile units.

Hundreds of representatives from the textile industry attended the function organised at Samruddhi auditorium here. The Minister said that a team led by the Textile Commissioner made unit-to-unit survey of the affected areas to assess the losses and decided upon the assistance.

''We have considered the Surat calamity as a special case as it suffered very much and needed more compassion'', he said, that also making.

He stressed the need of value addition and diversification to boost the export of textiles, which faces competition from countries like China.

Textile Commissioner J N Singh said a total of 5,845 textile units in Surat will get the calamity relief and Rs 56 crore has been earmarked for the same.

Another Rs 21 crore as interest subsidy for the working capital will also be made available for the affected, the Textile Commissioner said.
