BHU violence: 20 students expelled from hostel

Varanasi, Dec 30 (UNI) The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) administration has expelled 20 students from hostel for their alleged involvement in Thursday last violence on the central university campus.

''Twenty students residing in Acharya Narendra Deo, Birla and Raja Ram Mohan Roy hostels were expelled for their involvement in a scuffle on Thursday night. While 14 of them were permanently expelled, remaining six will stay expelled for this academic session,'' Chief Proctor S K Singh said here today.

Dr Singh further said all the 20 students hailing from Arts and Social Science faculties have also been banned from attending classes, pending an enquiry into the violence.

A one man committee headed by former Chief Proctor Omkar Singh has been constituted to probe the matter. The committee has been directed to submit its report within a month, he added.

Two group of students had clashed on the BHU campus late Thursday night, and indulllged in bombing and firing. Two motorcycles and hostel property was also damaged by the students. A case had been registered at the Lanka police station here against unidentified persons in connection with the violence.
