Two BJP MLAs resign in Manipur

Imphal, Dec 29 (UNI) Opposition BJP in Manipur received another blow when its two legislators- BD Behring and Danny Shaiza- quit the party and resigned from the state assembly with immediate effect, official sources said here today.

The two, in separate letters addressed to BJP president H Borbabu and Assembly speaker Maniruddin Sheikh yesterday, tendered their resigntions with immediate effect, assembly and party sources said.

With this the BJP, which had four MLAs in the 60-member house, was now in deep crisis as former chief minister and MLA R K Dorendra Singh, also keeping low profile with the party was hobnobbing with the ruling Congress.

Mr Behring confirmed he and Mr Shaiza submitted the resignation letters to the BJP leadership and to the Speaker in person yesterday. He said they resigned in support of the ongoing Indo-Naga Peace talk.

Presently, the NSCN leadership were camping in New Delhi for talks.

Mr Behring also charged the Congress-led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government headed by O Ibobi Singh here with alienating the tribal people of Manipur.

The Assembly Secretariat was yet to issue a bulletin about the resignations of two BJP MLAs though it published a notice on the resignations of two mlas of Federal Party of Manipur. The two FPM legislators- Samuel Jendai and Henry Paotei- had also quit the assembly recently.

All the four MLAs, who resigned from the house, were of Naga origin.
