Vasan's birthday observed

Chennai, Dec 28 (UNI) Mass feeding of the poor, free distribution of sarees and dhoties, blood donation, health camps and special prayers marked the 42nd birthday celebrations of Union Minister of state for Statistics and Programme Implementation G K Vasan in Tamil Nadu today.

In the city, Youth Congress Volunteers led by State Youth Congress President Mayur S Jayakumar cut a giant cake weighing 42 kgs and distributed it to party volunteers assembled at Sathyamoorthy Bhavan, the party headquarters.

General Secretary Biju Chacko arranged the supply of free spectacles to over 100 needy persons at Government Eye Hospital here. The Party Treasurer and CLP Leader D Sudharsanam distributed the free spectacles.

Mr G R Kathiravan another General Secretary of the State Youth Congress arranged a special lunch to the inmates of the 'Balavihar', a Home for mentally retarded children. State Electricity Minister and DMK Treasurer Arcot N Veerasamy and State Youth Congress President Mayur S Jayakumar also served special lunch the mentally retarded children, a youth Congress press release said.

Tamil Nadu Congress Comittee Secretary Mr Munaivar Batsha and former Congress Councillor of Chennai Corporation Mrs Rani Krishnan had arranged a special lunch to the inmates of 'Annai Illam' an old-age home in the city, and to the inmates of the 'Annai Fathima Centre for orphaned children at Karappakkam suburb.

At a special function, organised by the North Chennai District Congress President Mr Royapuram Mano distributed a cash relief of Rs 25,000 to five fishermen families of Kasimedu, who were found missing when they ventured into the sea, a few days ago.

Congress Rajya Sabha member Gnanadesikan distributed free rice packets to 400 families of Kasimedu who were affected in the recent fire mishap in their hamlet.

Members of the Tambaram Congress Committee donated their blood at the blood donation camp organised at Hindu Mission Hospital Tambaram.

Congress President Mrs Sonia gandhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Union Ministers, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu BJP President L Ganesan, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam(DMDK) founder- President and actor Vijaykanth, Popular film actor Sarathkumar and others greeted Mr Vasan over telephone.
