Lucknow, Dec 27 (UNI) Police have arrested two people, including an independent Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC), in connection with the murder of a Lucknow-based school manager on September 21.

On the basis of substantial evidence, MLC S P Singh and Shiv Bahadur had been arrested in connection with the killing of Chandra Pal Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajeev Krishna told mediapersons here tonight.

In 1977, C P Singh and S P Singh used to teach in a city-based school. On being sacked in 1983 from the service, the duo had opened different schools under the same name 'Lucknow Public School' in 1991. ''A case regarding the school's name is still pending before a court,'' Mr Krishna said.

''C P Singh and S P Singh were relatives. The MLC had planned the murder of C P Singh. He had given the killing contract to Shiv Bahadur while being in Kolkata,'' he said.

Shiv Bahadur had passed the contract to two hardened miscreants Anant Verma alias Anand (Gonda) and Ranbeer Singh alias Neelu (Barabanki),'' Mr Krishna informed adding that both the accused had already surrendered before the police.

While the MLC rubbished all the charges, saying it was just a conspiracy hatched against him and ''he is truly innocent'', Shiv Bahadur alleged that S P Singh had handed him Rs 10 lakh for killing the school manager.

Meanwhile supporters of the MLC staged a 'dharna'. The mob could only be pacified after police reached the spot.

Chandra Pal Singh was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne youths at the gate of APS sector-1 Ashiana branch on Thursday on September 21.

Police had recovered 10 shells of 7.65 bore from the spot.

Earlier, the same bore weapon was used in over dozens of high-profile killings in the state.
