Mayawati likens herself with goddess Lakshmi

Lucknow, Dec 28: Terming herself as another manifestation of goddess 'Lakshmi' reverred by the 'Vaishya' community, BSP president Mayawati today appealed to the community to support her party in the 2007 Assembly polls, so that their wealth and social status increase.

''Maya is another name of Lakshmi and you worship her to get fame and wealth...if you vote me, the community will certainly benefit in the same measure,'' she said addressing a 'Vaishya' conference here.

''I do not want you to worship me in place of the deity, but your vote and support will make all the difference and fetch you fame and wealth, which have eluded the community in the present regime.'' In the conference, Ms Mayawati was showered with gold ornaments, gold crowns and other valuables including a cheque for Rs one lakh by the traders.

She was also given a sword by the community and urged to fight the problem of law and order with it.

Ms Mayawati assured she would certainly end the bad law and order situation after coming to power. ''I do not need a sword to control the situation as a pen will do the work,''she said.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said now BSP's elephant (election symbol) is acceptable to everyone with the slogan of 'Tilak Tarazu aur Talwar, Haathi par hain sab sawar'.
