2 cops convicted in Sharif Khan case; 8 acquitted
Ahmedabad, Dec 28 (UNI) A local court here today sentenced two policemen to ten years imprisonment and acquitted eight others in connection with the escape of Sharif Khan, close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, from their custody on April 21, 1993.
Eleven policemen were arraigned in the Sharif Khan escape case but PSI K P Thakur had since died.
The two convicted policemen are head constable Ramdayal Dudani Mishra and constable Pratapsinh Parmar, who is attached to the Bhavnagar police department.
On April 21, 1993 Sharif Khan was being brought from the Sabarmati jail to the court in a police van. Khan wanted to have water to drink and was allowed, and then asked to make a phone call.
Allowed, to go alone to a nearly shop, he escaped.
Taking a serious view of the incident, Additional principal sessions judge Z K Sayeea said that since the prisoner was a hardened criminal, such leniency should not have been shown to him.
All the 11 police personnel were charged under sections IPC 225, 222, 206 and for consipiracy under section 120 (B).
