Left seek UN intervention to halt Saddam execution
New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Opposing vehemently the confirmation of the death sentence on Saddam Hussain Iraqi appelate court in Iraqi, the Left parties today sought the UN's immediate intervention to halt the execution on the plea that it would lead to ''serious consequences.'' They also asked the UPA government to take all out efforts to mobilise public opinion against the proposed execution.
While the CPI(M) said that no ''fair deal'' is possible for Saddam Hussain and his colleagues under while there is US occupation of Iraq, the CPI hoped that the people of Iraq would more fiercely oppose the ''barbaric judgement.'' ''The execution of the death sentence will be a form of judicial assassination, ''the CPI(M) polit bureau said in a statement.
''The US and the British government should realise that they will be responsible for the serious consequences from this extra-legal step,'' it said.
It also said the UN, which was ''bypassed in the aggression and occupation'' of Iraq, must intervene to stop the execution. CPI National Secretary Shamim Faizi said what had happend, had been apprehended earlier.
''The puppet court has followed the dictates of the Washington administration,'' he added.
