Identity cards necessary for voting:CEC

Gorakhpur, Dec 27 (UNI) Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy today said photo identity cards would be necessary for voting in the forthcoming assembly elections in UP.

Reviewing the electoral rolls in Gorakhpur and Azamgarh divisions, Mr Gopalaswamy instructed the District Magistrates to inform people ahead of the 2007 Assembly poll that 'Matdata Pahchan Patra nahi to matdan nahi' (no vote without indentity cards).

Stating that elections would be held by May 14 at any cost, Mr Gopalaswamy directed the publication of electoral rolls at earliest by January 3 and warned that it should not have the name of any deceased voter.
