WC demands one-third tickets for women in polls
Hardwar, Dec 24: The Uttaranchal State Women Commission today demanded one-third representation for women in the coming state assembly elections.
Talking to the newspersons here in 'Meet the Press' organised by the district Press Club Hardwar, State Women Commission Chairperson Santosh Chauhan said, ''The commission has written to all the political parties, appealing them to field one-third women candidates in the coming sate Assembly elections.'' She regretted the lack of representation for women in the last Assembly elections, saying she was confident that this time all the political parties would give more preference to women.
Dr Chauhan further asserted that Uttaranchal is a women dominated state where in 8 out of the total 13 districts women outnumbered men, adding,''Women played a leading role in the creation of the state and they are at the centrestage of the social and economic life of the state.'' ''In the 70-member state Assembly there are only four women MLAs at present, which means women representation in the Assembly was only 4.5 per cent of the total strength,'' she added.
