Centre urges Myanmar to act against NE insurgents

Aizawl, Dec 24: The Union Government has requested Myanmar to adopt a pro-active approach against anti-Indian insurgents of North East operating from Myanmar.

The Union Home Ministry urged Yangon to beef up security along Indo-Myanmar border and put a check on drug trafficking.

Quoting Home Ministry sources intelligence officials here today said India footlinked its demands with an assurance to provide assistance in the form of training and capacity-building of Myanmarese security forces during meeting between Home Minister Shivraj Patil and the Myanmar army chief last week.

Earlier during a home secretary-level talks in September this year, the Indian Home Ministry had told the neighbouring country to agree a verification process to spot the militant camps and flush out the rebels.

In the last round of talks held in Yangoon, India had furnished evidence of 15 militant camps belonging to the NSCN (K), NSCN (IM), PLA, UNLF and ULFA along the 1643-km international border that Myanmar shares with Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
