Workshop on animal birth control

Chennai, Dec 21: A workshop on Animal Birth Control (ABC) sponsored by Bardot Foundation and conducted by Vets Without Borders will be held here on January 9 as a prelude to the fourth international conference -- Asia for Animals 2007.

According to Blue Cross, since its introduction in 1996, the programme had helped reduce the human rabies cases.

Prior to this, as many as 135 dogs a day were being killed by the Chennai Corporaton by electrocution.

However, the Chennai Corporation was the first in the country to stop their killings following the introduction of the programme which is approved by WHO and Animal Welfare Board in India.

The Union Government had in 2001 introduced the Control of Street Dogs through ABC Programme under which each municipality or local body is required to take it up.

The largest international animal welfare groups, including those in the USA, Australia and Hong Kong are the sponsors of the ABC Programme.
