Mukhi demands MCD elections should be held on time
New Delhi, Dec 21 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi today demanded that Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections should be held as per schedule and in no way be postponed.
It was the responsibility of the Election Commissioner of Delhi to conduct the elections and the Delhi government had nothing to do with it, he said while sounding a warning that if any attempt was made to delay the polls on any account, the BJP would take to the streets and also knock the door of the court.
The Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government in the state was making all efforts to delay the municipal elections and buy time seeing the writing on the wall, a huge loss at the hustings, he added.
Delimitation Committee had given its report 15 days ago but it was yet to be handed over to the Lt Governor, even when it was required to be handed over to him at the earliest, Dr Mukhi said.
The state Law Secretary had raised ''absurd'' objections on the report when it was well known that no nobody had the power to make even the slightest of changes to the report, he added.
''This was just another silly excuse to delay issuance of notification based on the Delimitation Committee report and hence the MCD polls, which will not be tolerated,'' he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Leader of Opposition in MCD Subhash Arya said the Election Commissioner of Delhi should ensure that elections were held as soon as possible so as to ensure that members of the new House could assume office on April 6, by when its term legally ended.
