Gogoi meets Sonia
New Delhi, Dec 21 (UNI) Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi and briefed her about the law and order situation in the state.
The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the recent threat issued to the minorities by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) asking them to quit the state at the earliest.
Talking to UNI, Mr Gogoi said he asked Ms Gandhi that the state should be given a special economic package, which was ''better and more attractive'' than the one given to Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh. ''That would help the government in attracting investments in the state.'' He also pleaded for higher investment in the state's infrastructure sector which was essential for improving law and order in the state.
He said more investments in North Eastern States would provide greater opportunities for employment which would automatically bring peace in the region.
Mr Gogoi will meet Law Minister H R Bhardwaj tomorrow.
