Evolve panchayat 'sector windows,' says MP

Puducherry, Dec 21 (UNI) Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) Parliamentary Party Leader M Ramadass today urged the territorial administration to evolve panchayat 'sector windows' in the state budget to provide necessary funds to the local bodies.

Thanking the administration for the passage of the bills in the Territorial Assembly amending panchayat and municipality acts here for devolution of powers to the elected representatives of the local bodies here, Prof Ramadass also urged the government to evolve activity mapping for them.

Refuting allegations the Karaikal Region of the union territory was being neglected, Prof Ramadass said the administration was taking all steps for its development thereby providing more employment opportunities to the youth.

Prof Ramadass said he had already suggested the administration declare Karaikal as backward region in the event of which it will become eligible to get financial assistance of Rs 600 crore from the the Centre's Backward District Development Fund.

He also sought a separate planning committee and allocation of 24 per cent of the total budget for Karaikal Region.

The MP exhorted legislators from the region to take part in the Assembly session and other government activities and strive for the development of the region with government participation.

The Karaikal Struggle Group should also shed its demand for a seperate union territory status for the region, he added.
