Dutt gets relief again, bail extended till Jan 18

New Delhi, De 21: A big releif for Sanjay Dutt as the TADA court extended the actor's bail to January 18, 2007 today. The court had earlier given him an extention of two-days on Tuesday.

Sanjay Dutt was convicted under the Arms Act for possessing a 9mm pistol and an AK-47 rifle by the TADA court in the 1993 Mumbai blast trial. On December 19, he had filed an application seeking time before he surrenders to the court.

Time was seeked on various grounds, he pleaded that he needed to make arrangements for his daughter Trishala's education in the US. Trishala is coming to India on December 23 and he said he needed to spend time with her. On this regard, the Court had given an extented his bail till thursday.

Under the Arms Act, Dutt might face a prison term of five or ten years. He said that he would invoke the provisions of Section 4 of the Probation of Offenders Act at the time of making submissions on his quantum of sentence. Under this provision, he can be released on bond on assurance of good conduct for a period not less than three years and his lawyers are likely to seek a pardon on the grounds of good behaviour.
