Varun upsets top seed Nikhil in nation ranking tennis
Pune, Dec 20 (UNI) Unseeded Varun Shrivastav of Pune upset injured top-seeded Nikhil Passi 8-1 and Tejas Shewade beat fourth-seeded Varun Pathare 8-7(1) in the Boys under 10 event, while unseeded Anirudh Darp upset fifth seeded Ishan Choubal 8-3 and Sukhamani Wadhawa upset fourth seeded Bharati Bailapudi 7-3 in the Boys and Girls under-12 event to enter the next rounds at the 21st Praveen national ranking tennis championship and state ranking Tennis Tournament 2006 here today.
In the boys under-10 events Tejas Shevde once again played outstandingly to knock out Varun Pathare in a tie-breaker 8-7(1). Top-seeded Nikhil Passi was shocked by Varun Shirvastav who went ahead to enter the semi-final round.
While there were no upsets recorded in the national ranking under 14 events, seeded Surya Pawan (1) and Tushal Thawani (2) put out Rakshay Thakkar (5) and Karan Avalani (4) in an easy manner to enter into the semi-final.
Unseeded Archita Shruti of AP sweated top-seeded Surya Tejaswini of AP in the best match of the day. Surya had to put up a tough fight to dismiss Archita in a tie breaker 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in the 1 hour 30 minutes match. She went ahead to enter the semi-finals in the girls under-14 event.
Following are the results: Quarter Final: Boys Under 14: Surya Pawan (1) bt Rakshy Thakkar (5) 6-2, 6-4, Arjyn Kadhe (6) bt Anirudha Darp 6-2, 6-1, Vishvesh Sinha (3) bt Sourabh Patil (8) 6-1, 6-2, Tushal Thawani (2) bt Karan Avalani 6-2, 6-4.
