PM lays foundation stone of Amritsar-Wagah 4-laning

Amritsar, Dec 20 (UNI) Keen to provide the best facilities to exporters, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today inaugurated a construction project on the four-laning of the presitigious Amritsar-Wagah National Highway-I.

The PM launched the project through remote control at a public rally at the Ranjit Avenue here.

Among those present on the occasion were Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, K H Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Industries Ashwani Kumar, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

This project is expected to facilitate import-export trade through the Wagah road joint check post with Pakistan. The Prime Minister is keen on increasing the volume of trade through the road check post and has often taken up this matter with Pakistan.

The four laning would be on a stretch of 35-km from the Amritsar byepass to Wagah check post. The total cost of the project is expected to be Rs 205.88 crore and it would be constructed in about two years.

The project would include seven bridges and one under-pass.

There will be one truck parking along the highway and 18 bus bays.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also launched the multi-crore Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) for the Holy City to improve civic amenities.
