PM lays foundation of Amritsar-Wagah 4-laning
Amritsar, Dec 20: Keen to provide the best facilities to theexporters, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today inaugurated theconstruction project on the four-laning of the presitigeousAmritsar-Wagah National Highway-I.
The PM launched the project through remote control at a public rally at the Ranjit Avenue here.
Among those present on the occasion were Union Minister of Statefor Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, K H Muniyappa, UnionMinister of State for Industries Ashwani Kumar, Chief Minister CaptAmarinder Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.
This project is expected to facilitate import-export trade throughthe Wagah road joint check post with Pakistan. The Prime Minister iskeen on increasing the volume of trade through the road check post andhas often taken up this matter with Pakistan.
The four laning would be on a stretch of 35-km from the Amritsarbyepass to Wagah check post. The total cost of the project is expectedto be Rs 205.88 crore and it would be constructed in about two years.
The project would include seven bridges and one under-pass.
There will be one truck parking along the highway and 18 bus bays.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister also launched the multi-croreJawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) for the Holy City toimprove civic amenities.
