Indian denies illicit relationship with maid

Dubai, Dec 20 (UNI) A young Indian working in Qatar has complained that he was physically tortured by police to make a confessional statement about his illicit relationship with an Indian maid, he told a criminal court in Doha.

The man, name not disclosed, showed the judges burn marks on his hands and legs alleging that while he was in police remand for interrogation, the cops used live cigarette butts to torture him.

''Due to the torture I confessed of having illicit relationship with the maid, although the fact is that both of us are Christians and come from the same place in India and know each other through our families,'' the accused told the court yesterday.

''She called me and I went to see her. That's all. I do not have any illicit relationship with her,'' The Peninsula quoted him as saying in court.

The prosecution first read out the charges against the duo in presence of their lawyers.

The man refuted the charges when the statement was translated into Hindi.

The court will issue the verdict in the case on January 25.
