CM inaugurates first of its kind Animal Home
New Delhi, Dec 20 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today inaugurated the newly-constructed Animal Home, by Delhi Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, opposite Tis Hazari Court complex in North Delhi.
Speaking on this occasion, she said SPCA, whose objective was to prevent cruel treatment and ensure the welfare of animals, was among the first institutionalised response in India to meet the challenge of providing protection to the animals against cruelty.
Ms Dikshit expressed satisfaction over SPCA's record revenue collection of Rs three crore through courts since 1999, which was much higher than the revenue collection during the past 23 years, which was only Rs 52 lakh.
Delhi Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, MLAs Ramakant Goswami, Naseeb Singh, P S Sawhney, Councillors Neetu Verma, Brij Mohan Sharma, Chief Secretary Ramesh Narayanswami and SPCA Chairman H R Khajuria were present on the occasion.
Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said under the leadership of Ms Dikshit development of the capital had gained momentum in the last eight years.
He expressed hope that the new housing complex would provide better care and facilities for the animals.
Mr Khajuria disclosed that 50,000 animals were given outdoor treatment in SPCA clinic at Darya Ganj and the main Hospital at Tis Hazari.
Mr Khajuria elaborated future plans of the SPCA which included setting up a mobile dispensary equipped with the first-aid equipments for providing immediate relief to the animals and their transportation to the SPCA hospitals, conversion of SPCA Hospital into a model hospital with modern facilities and infrastructure and organisation of an effective awareness campaign through seminars in consultation with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
A new housing complex comprising of six enclosures in the SPCA premises would go a long way in facilitating protection to different type of animals.
A large underground tank for proper and hygienic disposal of cowdung that could be converted into manure had also been provided.
Delhi SPCA had been given the land for providing infrastructure for animal care.
