Chandigarh MC polls peaceful with 42 per cent voter turnout
Chandigarh, Dec 20 (UNI) The elections to the Municipal Coporation of Chandigarh concluded peacefully today. Nearly 42 per cent of the electorate cast their vote.
''The highest 46.03 per cent polling was registered from ward number 26, while the lowest 31.09 per cent of polling was registered from ward number 15,'' an Election official said here.
The polling was largely peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any of the 25 wards of the corporation for which 172 candidates, inluding 53 women were in the fray, he said.
The State Election Commission had deployed nearly 3750 personnel for poll duty at 513 polling booths, manned by around 3000 police personnel.
With total 26 wards in the city, the elections to ward number seven were countermanded following the death of a candidate. The repoll will be held on January 14 next year.
The counting of the votes will take place at three centres on December 22 and the results will be declared the same day.
Simultaneous polls to the panchayat samiti and bye-election to elect a Panch were also held today for which separate polling stations were set up.
