Sr. Alice Lukose given Js. Krishna Iyer HR Award 2006

Kochi, Dec 20: Sister Alice Lukose, Founder of Women's InitiativeNetwork (WIN), has been chosen for the Justice Krishna Iyer HumanRights Award 2006.

The Justice Krishna Iyer Human Rights Foundation, while announcingthe award here today, said that through WIN, which she founded in 1991,Sr. Alice had given a new life to over 12,000 families in Alappuzha andErnakulam districts through empowerment of the women and children offishermen's families.

''The daring dream and vision of Sr. Alice is today a powerfulmovement. Over 60,000 members of the families have moved forward to anew world of empowerment, actualization of their human rights andconstructive contribution to societal advancement. The self help groupswhich WIN has formed and operates are centres of human energygalvanized for social and economic development and transformation,'' itsaid.

The WIN activities include thrift and credit operations, communityhealth programmes, capacity building, seminars, training campaigns onsocial and gender issues, training children and youth in variousmeasures for environmental regeneration including backwater eco systemregeneration, campaigns on ill effects of sand mining and use ofplastics and promotion of use of vermicompost and care of trees andplants.

The award will be presented to Sr. Alice on December 22 at theresidence of Justice Krishna Iyer. Noted jurist and human rightsactivist Justice (Retd.) Rajindar Sachar will present the award.
