TN will move Supreme Court on M'periyar dam issue: Karunanidhi

Chennai, Dec 19 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today declared that the state government would move the Supreme Court to find a solution to the Mullaiperiyar dam issue.

To a question on the next course of action as the second round of talks at the Ministerial level failed to achieve a breakthrough, Mr Karunanidhi said the all-party meeting convened by the government on October 23, had already decided to move the apex court if the talks failed to yield the desired result.

Answering a query, he recalled that the all-party meeting, in a resolution, had stated that the state government, as a gesture of goodwill and as suggested by the Supreme Court, could hold talks with Kerala, but if the talks failed to benefit the state, it could approach the apex court to ensure that its February 27, order, allowing Tamil Nadu to raise the water level in the dam from 136 ft to 142 ft was implemented.

The apex court had also clearly stated that Tamil Nadu be permitted to carry out further strengthening measures in the dam and Kerala and its officers should not cause any obstruction, he pointed out.

Mr Karunananidhi, while talking to newspersons in Madurai on December 15, had said that if the talks failed, the state would have no option, but to approach the apex court immediately.
