Punjab Police, BSF win opening matches in Ramesh Hockey
Jalandhar, Dec 19 (UNI) Punjab Police and Border Security Force (BSF) have won their opening matches in the 9th Romesh Chander Memorial Hockey Tournament here today.
While Punjab Police recorded a convincing 3-1 victory against formidable Punjab and Sindh Bank in the inaugural match at the Burlton Park Surjit Hockey Stadium here, the BSF downed Corps of Signals by a solitary goal.
Punjab and Sindh Bank dominated the proceedings in the first half and secured a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute when international Sharanjit Singh struck to open the account. The lead prevailed till 40th minute and police team's Gagandeep Singh secured the equaliser with a fine field goal.
Four minutes later drag flick expert Jugraj Singh increased the lead for the police team (2-1) on penalty stroke while the third goal just before the closure by Sukhwinder Singh on a well carved field move sealed the fate of the opposition.
In the other match, BSF and Corps of Signals made spirited attacks and counter-attacks with defenders on both sides foiling rival moves with equal elan.
It was only in the 42nd minute that BSF got a penalty corner which was converted by Raj Singh.
