Namdhari XI open campaign with win
Chennai, Dec 19 (UNI) Nadhari XI, making their debut in this premier event in the national calendar, began their campaign in Pool C, in style edging out formidable Air India 2-1, in the 83rd MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here today.
Their attack propelled by Balwinder Singh, who got the equaliser in the 30th minute, Namdhari, down by a goal as early as 13th minutes into the contest, drew level with a field goal to go into half time 1-1 and during a swift counter, snatched the lead when Gurpreet Singh found the target with a stinging shot in the 71st minute.
As the crucial contest began in the three team pool to force a place in the quarters, Air India led by international Len Aiyappa, who was the pivot of their attack, dominated play in the first quarter. Leading from the front, Aiyappa gave Air India, a perfect take off converting the very first penalty corner in the 13th minute with his charectaristic power and speed.
But Namdhari XI did not succumb to the pressure.
They recouped admirably and gradually matched their mighty rivals, move for move, as it were.
Air India are now in a piquant situation having been held to a draw yesterday in their opening match against Indian Railways. Both gained a point each. Namdhari had three points from their splendid win.
