STQC Director General inaugurates 'INCREASE 2006'

Chennai, Dec 18 (UNI) 'INCREASE-2006,' a three-day international conference on reliability and safety engineering, was inaugurated by Standardising, Testing, Quality Control (STQC) Director General S L Sarnot here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sarnot said the time was ripe for the unification of several research areas into a unified investigation of system reliability.

''Special purpose or single purpose hardware is nearly a thing of the past. As software reliability is more related to functionality than to physical components, addressing software reliability is equal to addressing system reliability,'' he added.

In this context, he said a system level approach to the overall reliability problem would be more effective than attempting to isolate either hardware or software.

''A solution to software reliability then should cover not only the software aspects of the reliability question, but also the wider system aspects simultaneously,'' he added.

The aim of the conference was to promote a closer partnership, technical understanding and advancement in the areas of reliability and safety in the context of rapidly changing world scenario.

The conference is jointly hosted by the IIT Kharagpur and Centre for Relaibility, Chennai.
