Seven arrested for possessing illicit liquor in city

Chennai, Dec 18 (UNI) Prohibition Enforcement Wing Police today seized 15,000 packets of illicit liquor from a residence in MMDA colony at suburban Madhavaram and arrested seven people, including four women in this connection.

Police said acting on a tip off, the police intercepted an autorickshaw at Madhavaram and seized a bag of illicit arracks. Based on the information provided by the occupants of the autorickshaw, they raided the house and effected the seizure.

They also seized the autorickshaw also. The total worth of the seizure was Rs three lakh.

They were identified as Sulochana (50), Pushpa (40), Mala (33), Fathima (57) and her son John Basha (28) Ramachandran alias Nagesh (65) and auto driver Balaji.

All of them were remanded to judicial custody.

Preliminary enquiries revealed that the arrested gang was a notorious illicit arrack sellers of Tondiyarpet, and following the strict vigil of the police, they shifted their business to Madhavaram area from Tondiyarpet, police added.
