No response to strike call over Kot Bhalwal jail incident

Srinagar, Dec 18 (UNI) A general strike call given by the Hurriyat Conference (Geelani faction), the Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of Faith) and the Kashmir Bar Association (KBA), to protest the clashes in Jammu's Kot Bhalwal jail yesterday, evoked no response today.

All state and central government offices, banks, shops and business establishments functioned normally. Both public and private transport plied as usual.

Schools and colleges were already closed for winter vacations.

Reports of business as usual were received from all district headquarters in the Kashmir valley.

The three organisations had given the strike call to protest clashes in Kot Bhalwal jail yesterday in which 21 detainees and 15 security personnel were wounded.

Addressing a joint news conference here, Dukhtaran chief Asiya Andrabi, KBA president Mian Abdul Qayoom and senior Hurriyat leader Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi also condemned the police action.
