Girl raped, murdered, CM orders CID inquiry

Kolkata, Dec 18 (UNI) A teenage girl was today raped and murdered in the areas earmarked for the Tata project in Singur in Hoogly district, raising fresh controversy.

Hoogly Police Superintendent Suprotim Sarkar told UNI that the girl has been raped elsewhere and her body was brought and burnt here to hide the evidence.

''We have found this upon initial investigation. But as of now there is no political angle to it,'' he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Minsiter Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee condemned the incident and order a CID inquiry into it.

The burnt body of Tapashi Mallik, aged 18, was found in the land earmarked for the Tata project. The villagers alleged that she had gone to the fields to relieve her self but was raped and then burnt alive.

The villagers claimed Tapashi, a resident of Bajeberia areas of Gopalnagar in Singur, was an active member of ''Krishi Jami Raksha Committee''.

Meanwhile, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee, who entered the 16th day of her fast today, cancelled her sit-in-demonstration and other activities today and said 'silence' was her protest today.

She also called for a 48-hour bandh protesting the CPI(M) 'goondaraj' and exhorted that she would fight this to the end.
