FDI allowed on automatic route in education sector

New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) The Government today told Rajya Sabha that no sector policy is notified for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in education as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry had allowed the FDI on an automatic route in Education sector in February 2000.

Minister of State for Human Resources Development D Purandeshwari said, in her written reply, that the government would introduce appropriate legislation in the Parliament at the earliest after finalising the policy on FDI in Education. A proposal to regulate entry and operation for maintainance of quality and prevention of commercialisation of education by Foreign Educational Institutions in Higher Education was under the consideration of the Government, she added.

She said domestic private unaided higher education institutions and Deemed Universities were regulated by the University Grants Commission guidelines while state laws regulate private universities, established by respective legislatures.
