CPM for all-party meet on Parliament disruptions
New Delhi, Dec 18: Regretting that important issues like women reservation, SEZ and the approach paper of the eleventh plan could not be taken up in Parliament due to frequent disruptions, the CPI(M) today demanded that the government call an all-party meet to find ways to ensure smooth running of the Houses.
''People are greatly agitated over the fact that no discussion took place on issues like the Sachar Committee report and the deepening agrarian crisis among other topical and burning matters,'' Party Parliamentary group leader Sitaram Yechuri told mediapersons.
Mr Yechuri, flanked by party floor leader in the Lok Sabha Basudeb Achariya, demanded that the UPA government convene an all-party meeting to find ways and means to ensure that Parliament was not disrupted.
The Left leaders emphasised that the institution of Parliament was not meant for ''sqabbling on non-serious issues'' and the framers of the constitution had visualised that Parliament should conduct business for at least six months in a year.
However, Parliament has worked only for 80 days this year, he said. ''We are afraid people have started losing faith in the institution...it will send a dangerous signal for the future of our democratic set up.'' The disruptions resulted in a loss to the national exchequer and the ''sad fact'' was that the main opposition was not observing the rules and norms.
''The ruling party and the opposition have to discharge their duty in this regard as they are accountable to the society,'' they added.
