Cess Citizens Pay For Education - Rs 8,746 Cr

New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) An estimated Rs 8,746 crores has been received in 2006-07 on account of Education Cess and a non- lapsable fund-- Prarambhik Shiksha Kosh-- set up to which the proceeds may be credited, Parliament was told today.

A provision of Rs. 8,746 crores for the initial transfer to the newly created Kosh has been made in the Union Budget 2006-07 against estimated receipts of education cess, Minister of State for Human Resource Development M A A Fatmi said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The Cess proceeds are utilised exclusively for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Mid-Day Meal Scheme after exhausting the funds provided by way of the Gross Budgetary Support, Fatmi said.
