Karunanidhi launches phase 2 land distribution

Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, Dec 17 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi launched the second phase of land distribution to landless agricultural labourers here today.

His Cabinet colleagues simultaneously launched the scheme in other parts of the state.

Official sources said, in the second phase, 27,880 acres of land would be distributed.

In the first phase, launched by Mr Karunanidhi in September, the Government had planned to distribute 24,271.14 acres. However, only 14,900 acres were distributed so far. The task of land distribution would be over soon.

The Chief Minister, keeping his poll promise of distributing free land to landless agricultural families, had launched the scheme on September 17 at Tiruvallur.

The first phase benefitted 23,440 poor families, the sources added.
